1.   There are words that I remember
From the books I used to read
Tales of life and liberty
Of jealousy and greed
And the words would turn to poems
And the poetry to song
And so I’d hear the voices
Of those writers, living on

And today I am a writer
And these words I write for you
Yes today I am a writer
That’s who I am
It’s what I do!
2.   Now the writers told their stories
So that we might understand
The blood and sweat and sacrifice
It took to build this land
And in scenes that catch the glory
And the misery of strife
The artist with his paintbrush
Brings our history to life

And today I am an artist
Painting life in shades of blue
And today I am an artist
That’s who I am
It’s what I do!
And today I am an artist
Painting life in shades of blue
Yes today I am an artist
That’s who I am
It’s what I do!
3.   Now each story has a lesson
And the lessons must be taught
Every generation
Finds its battles to be fought
But if the parents teach the children
And the children learn to see
Then the artists and the writers
With their dreams can set us free

And today I’ll be your teacher
Let me show you something new
Yes today I’ll be your teacher
That’s who I am
It’s what I do!
Oh that’s who I am
It’s what I do!
